Unity of Pensacola Building Recognized as Historic Site
Pensacola, FL — Unity of Pensacola is pleased to unveil the historic marker recognizing the church building as a historic site on Sunday, May 19, 2013. After Church services at approximately 11:30am, Rev. Jamie Sanders will reveal the cast aluminum sign designating the building as a Florida Heritage Site and a reception in the Fellowship Hall will follow.
Unity of Pensacola’s Board of Trustees and members raised special funds for the plaque to recognize the building’s historic and architectural significance to our community. “Our facility is beautiful, with exposed, arched beam ceilings, towering columns, and rich, vibrant stained glass,” says Rev. Jamie Sanders. “It is a privilege to gather here as a spiritual commUNITY.”
The Gothic Revival style building has a rich history dating back to 1905 when the Roman Catholic Diocese of Mobile constructed the facility for The Church of the Sacred Heart. In 1956, the church outgrew the facility and sold it to the City of Pensacola, serving as a concert hall for the Pensacola Symphony Orchestra and youth recreation center until it was sold to the Central Church of Christ in 1965. Unity of Pensacola purchased the church in 1982 and restored its 18 original Belgian-made stained glass windows.
“The church’s incredible architecture makes it a natural choice for special occasions like weddings, commitment ceremonies and concerts,” adds Rev. Sanders.
Unity of Pensacola is located at 716 North Ninth Avenue, Pensacola, Florida. For more information about Unity of Pensacola, please contact Rev. Jamie Sanders at 850-438-2277.
